New iPhone earpiece volume near mute

So, what we've got here: iPhone 5s 16 Gray, US GSM absolutely new. No sound from the earpiece on calls, etc. Sound ok on speaker and headphones.

What could it be?

Answers that proved to be wrong and what cannot be done (for some reasons).

1. Not the earpiece unit itself to blame - Have 2 similar handsets, swapped the earpiece units (thanks to iFixit tear-down guide, the speaker replacement is quite an easy procedure) works ok.

2. Not a software issue - restored both from a backup and as new, no results. Also turning bluetooth on/off, resetting and all other tricks found on Apple forums and here do not work.

3. No, the phone cannot be currently taken back to Apple for warranty.

4. Yes, I've removed the clear screen protection :)

Actually the sound can be heard, but on maximum volume it is no louder than a mosquito in an adjasent room, i.e. it is absolutely impossible to talk using the earpiece.

Thanks for your help!

First I would try and make sure the shield is clipped in correctly and not screwed down too tight. Also, look at the ribbon cable that the speaker springs sit on. Make sure they're lined up nice. Is the speaker properly seated into the rubber gasket? Is that rubber gasket clogged up with gunk? Good luck, my first time encountering this issue.

Thanks, those were my ideas too. Tried playing with these. But the problem seems to lie deeper than this :( Anyway, already replaced it, let apple/foxconn guys dance now.

My 4S needed a power button cable. When I removed the earpiece speaker it was almost impossible not to tear the foam seal that attached the speaker to the ribbon cable. It was stuck on the ribbon and the seal tore easily. After I reassembled the phone the earpiece speaker is very faint. I believe that the ribbon acts as a sound board for the speaker so if the foam seal is damaged, as mine is, it will significantly reduce the speaker volume. I ordered a new speaker, I will post my results.

4S and 5/5S are absolutely different in terms of speaker mounting, so I guess that is not the case.

Malt man even if you took the power flex completely out and just put speaker in it would still work 100% power flex doesn't affect the speaker.

already taken the brick to apple and received a new one. the problem was in the logistics, buying a new speaker and replacing it was times cheaper and faster, but as mentioned above it was not the earpiece itself to blame. still interested, what could be the reason...
