Battery won't charge up - only works when plugged in.

Hi,

It got to the time when the battery needed to be replaced, or so I thought. I took it to a repair shop who installed a new one, after which they told me I was good to go. Once the battery had reached its max paying time, I plugged it in (for several hours)for it to recharge. However, when it came to unplugging it in view of listening, again the battery stated it was out. I tried different chargers, both through the mains and a computer. So, I brought it back to shop where I left overnight so they could take a look at it. The next day, I returned to find that they had tried multiple batteries but the device still wouldn't charge. I can now only as a consequence listen to it plugged into the wall. I suspect there is something wrong with the motherboard but not too sure. Can you help?

I have currently attached your question to the page for the 5th Generation iPod Video. Let me know if your model is this one, or the 6th Generation iPod Classic, since both have 80 GB versions and video capabilities.

I have the original one from around late 90's. Only works when in docking station. Can't use it with headphones, like at the dentist office.

Hi,

i had a similar issue with one of my iPod classic and in my case a new logic board fixed the problem.

Most have power mosfets, I believe that's what they call them. Look on cyberdoc. It is a small chip apple likes to use that goes out and needs to be pulled from the motherboard and the contacts joined with solder. This usually fixes the no charge problem . Bad batteries usually just die fast. They still charge and last a little bit.

possible solution - but since the shop "tried multiple batteries" - it could be a different problem

If it won't hold charge, and did with the old but worn battery, possibly something happened during the repair. Could be that the motherboard has been soiled or corroded. If so there is a chance that it can be cleaned (I managed when my iPod had similar symptoms).

You could go to the shop a tell them that the malfunction started after the repair, and would they accept responsibility. When they answer no, ask if they could - only from their wish to be helpful - give you a cleaning liquid plus instructions (there is repairmanuals on this forum if they prove to be completely uncooperative).

Several cleanings might be necessary. Focus on the area closest to the battery ribbon cable connector.

Good luck

I have the identical issue. I have a ipod classic 5 modded with a 256gb SSD and had a 2000mah battery. It never charged. Replaced the battery at a local tech shop with the standard battery. Still not charging. I have it rigged to a 5000mah battery pack which fits in my hoodie pocket so its portable. This has the wolfson DAC and sounds better than my phone and other DAPs.

I image whatever charges the battery, that is regulates the charge needs to be replaced.
