I would go in and make sure that all the connections to the logic board are completely connected. Make sure the screen is all the way down if the home button isn't working.

Same problem for me. Not sure what would've happened. I've checked every possible connection about 30 times, and everything looked fine.

I was told that a DFU restore might work, but it didn't for me. I had to use redsn0w to make a slightly modified IPSW of the original 7.0.4 iPhone 5 IPSW, whereafter iTunes will throw error 37 (unplug to then go into DFU mode), and I could restore to the original IPSW.

I did a restore this morning, nothing changed. There are two strips that run near the battery I bent slightly trying to get it out, don't think that would affect anything. Everything is connected well, I've checked a few times, screen is in just like it should be. Very perplexing. Voice control is glitchy like crazy calling people and turning music on from time to time as well. I should have added that. It's that problem that makes the phone useless when it's doing that. But it goes lengths of time without doing it so, at least there's that.

Same problem for me. I took it to the apple pros and they took it apart and said all connections were good. They think the new battery might have caused a power surge on Startup and fried something physical that that the sleep / wake and home buttons run thru. Time to go phone shopping. Not so sure it will be apple now

Take it to Apple, or check the serial number here to see if it is covered for the recall program:

You likely damaged some small chips on the logic board when you took the battery out. It's actually a common problem. If you search for jessabethany, she can do the repairs. There are actually quite of few of us on here that have done it, but she is one of a few that provides a reasonable repair service to fix it. Unless you have ultra micro soldering skills, I would highly discourage trying the repair yourself.

To agree with what people have already said, it sounds very much like pry damage. When trying to get that glued-in battery out, you shmushed some very small chips on the logic board that control those buttons.
