Can't power off but need to change screen

I have an iPad 2 with a broken screen. I am unable to power it off because the digitizer is unresponsive in the area of the red 'power off' slider.

I have discharged the battery as far as I can but it obviously still has power in it because when I press and hold the power button the battery symbol with flashing red showing battery empty appears.

My questions are:

Is there any other method of powering off the iPad?

Are there any serious consequences of changing the digitizer whilst there is still power?

All answers gratefully received.

Gekozen oplossing

Open up the iPad, don't disconnect anything. Find the battery connector and remove the screw to lift the logic board a little, examine the shape of the connector and cut a section of screen protection film, then insert into the connector to disconnect the battery. The system should be totally unpowered by now. Screw back the logic board, don't put too much force. When you finish the repair, remove the protective film and tighten the logic board.

My first iPad repair also went with power, the screen worked but the home button died. Maybe it has something to do with the case but I am not sure.

Thanks, Tom. That's a great idea. I'll have a look at the ifixit repair guide to see where the battery connector is situated and what it looks like. Regards, Chris.
