Nvidia discrete graphics GPU

I wonder if the Nvidia GPU is soldered on the motherboard or is it an add on card? There seems to be no extra room for an add on PCIe card

I wonder if for the base rMBP it is just disabled...

Yes there are two distinct versions of this system:

The low end version just doesn't have the NVIDIA populated on the logic board and the higher end models which has the chip.

GeForce GT 750M and Intel Iris Pro Graphics with memory shared with the system.

The system automatically switches between graphics systems based on use (when applications use OpenGL, Core Graphics or other graphically demanding technologies, the system will use the dedicated graphics card, otherwise it will use Intel HD Graphics to conserve battery life).

So there is still no option in Mavericks to "force discrete"?

Why would you do that? Don't you want the best graphics engine for the task? You can lower the screens resolution which will do that.

If you check the logic board photos or board views for the rMBP Late 2013 you will note that the logic board with and without GPU differ a lot. That is the reason also the heatsinks are different in these two models.

Placing the GPU on a card adds thickness, Apple never made any laptop GPU removable.
