Display screen is dark, yet I can connect to the system remotely

Hi, I have an early 2008 24" iMac, it had been working great until today. When I wake it up, the screen has gone dark, I tried to reboot it a few times, reset the SMC, reset PRAM, it is still nothing. I know it's not the logicboard because I can still VNC to it. However in the display preferences, it shows 1280x1024 resolution, instead of 1920x1200 resolution.

My question is whether the issue is the video card or the LCD itself.

I am leaning more toward the LCD because if the video card is bad, I shouldn't be able to VNC and see the display on my Macbook Air, is this assumption correct?

TIA

Can you give us the last four digits of your serial number so we can correctly identify which iMac you have.

Well, almost - The fact you can connect to your iMac via your MacBook Air means the display logic (GPU or LCD or the backlight system) has a problem.

To figure out what is bad follow these steps:

  • Can you see a faint desktop image when you aim a flashlight at an angle to the display screen (acting as a backlight to it) If you do then you know your issue is is the backlight.
  • Can you plug in an external monitor to see if your are able to get an image. If you do then you know the LCD has gone bad.
  • At this point you'll need to open up your system to inspect the GPU to see why it's not working.

Hi thanks for the reply the last four digits of the S/N is 00KM

I used a flash light as you said, there isn't a trace of the desktop.

I will borrow an external monitor to check the next step.

IFixedIt! YEA! :)

I was sad that my be loved 24" iMac went dark.

I thought of all the horrible things that might happened to it.

I thought the vid card was gone.

I thought the backlit was gone.

I thought the inverter was gone.

I thought the LCD panel was gone.

I open up the iMac tonight, HA! it was the backlit connector came loose! Once I snapped it back,

My iMac is working perfectly, Yeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaah. :)))))))))))
