Upgrade 2.7GHz (Base model) cpu to i7?

I searched and couldn't find an answer.

I know that the 2.9 GHz can be upgraded.

I want to do it by myself, but I just want to make sure in 110% before I order a specific CPU.

thank you.

You can't order any specific CPU - You have to use one that OEM supports... or you will have EFI, & OS problems. So your choice is limted to the 3.1 CPU (not much of a speed gain) IMnsHO if your machine is working sell it. Take that money and what you would spend on the upgrade CPU and buy a MacPro.

Unless you wish to spend a lot of time and money to create a custom iMac, what you propose is not cost effective. You have to find a 3.1 CPU for sale, you'll have to eat most of the money you've spent on the original machine (a used CPU is not worth a whole lot).

so, you're saying that the 3770s - i7 (3.1 GHz)

proccesor will work on my model?

I haven't looked into it (no desire) to know if that CPU is the one Apple used. . . if it is then yes.

I just bought the Intel 3770S (3,1GHz i7) and installed it in my 2,9GHz i5 iMac. The computer wont start. There is a tick when the powerbutton is pushed but nothing else happens. Im gonna reinstall the old i5 again and doublecheck everything but my guess is there is maybe to little juice in it? Then again, Im having a hard time believing they would change that much internal components when moving to the i7....

Update

-------------------

I took the computer apart again and found the problem to be one of the new RAM sticks I installed. The computer happily accepted the new i7 CPU, sorry for the info earlier. I can now verify that the Intel 3770S (Core i7 3.1GHz) will work. Be sure to clean the heatsink and apply new thermal paste before reassembly.

Sounds like you got the wrong chip or damaged something in the process. What happens when you put back the original CPU?

door

imac21, is that the correct CPU? From what I can tell, the late 2013 had an option to upgrade to the 3,1 GHz i7 (4770S) so that would be the maximum supported by the computers EFI

door

Frankly, its not much of a bump to go to such lengths given how hard it is to even get to the CPU in this system. At this point I would put the old chip back in and see if the system still works. I suspect you damaged something in the process.

Dan, he said he had the late 2013 iMac. If that's the case then the top of the line would be the 4770S, not the 3770S (that was for late 2012).

Thanks! Hentiki your right I had the OP system on the brain ;-} Still the same answer though not worth the work for such little gain.
