There are two possibilities here:

  • Dust cause in between the cover glass and the LCD
  • Something was resting on your keyboard when you tried closing it or something was placed on top of the lid and squashed the LCD enough to push away the liquid between the glass plates.

With the display off (black) shine a light at an angle to the display do you see the white area? If you do it's dust. Which you can clean by carefully taking the cover glass off. If not the display is damaged and it will need to be replaced. In either case you may want to leave it alone and just live with it if it's minor.

I see this all the time, in short it is Back Light Bleed. This is where over time and a lot of use the backlight elements start to bleed, and the backlight is no longer even through out the display, therefor you see a slightly different shade over that part of the screen.

Now sadly this cannot be repaired and the only way to get rid of it is to replace the LCD. This guide shows you how to remove the display assembly from the MBP but I would go even further and strip down the assembly to replace the LCD it self.

There are a lot of LCD available on ebay at good prices.

Next the following site can provide you with the list of compatible LCDs from multiple manufactures, don't buy from them just find the part number and search on eBay, just enter your MBP serial number hit enter and then click parts when your model appears

Please let me know how you get on and as always if you ever need any help just ask.

Can you explain what causes of 'Back Light Bleed'

I have seen it many times but still not able to produce a 100% confirmed answer to that question, it could be a few factors like, manufacture defect, overheating or prolonged use. Having mentioned manufacture defect if you took out the apple care plan it should be covered under your extended warranty, but hardly anyone takes the additional apple care. Not much of an answer to your question but I don't want to give you any false info.

Brendan - The issue is not a defect in manufacture of the LCD, over heating or prolonged use, but caused when the display has been pressed to the point the LCD liquid has shifted away from the area by an object pressing on the screen. The glass plates (front & back) become warped as they come close to touching each other to the point more of the back light light will exit. You can see this effect with a cheap calculator when yo press on the glass you'll see a liquid shift creating a hot spot. Which is what I stated in my answer (just above yours)

Im sorry you are incorrect, I see this all the time on the iMac 27" and there is no way the LCD and backlight can get pressed together. The term back light bleed is what you describe but can be caused by what I have stated 100%.

We're talking about MBP's here not iMacs that is why I asked you to explain what you defined as back light bleed. iMac's have a different set of issues than the laptops.
