LCD Problem half the screen is grey!

Hello,

My Macbook Pro 17" A1212 MA611LL/A is having a odd problem, after searching for a couple weeks with no answers I figure this is the place to get them.

Problem:

The bottom 1/3 of the screen is permanently grey(horizontal lines).

The Middle 1/3 of the screen is grey some of the time, and when it is grey it has vertical lines running through it.

The top 1/3 of the screen is fine.

So far:

I've ruled out memory, by using only one stick at a time...also rotating in a functional stick from my PC laptop. Doesn't affect problem.

I've ruled out a faulty gpu, the DVI output is perfectly fine. The picture comes in clear on an external display.

I've almost ruled out a bad cable. I've opened the macbook, the connection to the MB and Display are good. The cable looks kind of shabby cuz it's old, but the display doesn't change at different angles when I move it.

It's not the OS cuz i booted Ubuntu from disc and it's the same thing. Now I'm reinstalling OSX and I will make sure everything is up to date and run some hardware diagnostics.

I'm not sure what the display inverted does, maybe that's the culprit.

Any advice? bottom line, what part should i replace?

Well this could be two things, I have had it in the past when the display cable that connects under the hinge cover has come slightly disconnected and resulted in a similar issue to what you are describing. But that was a different model.

This will not have anything to do with the inverter as its only function is to power the backlight and doesn't do anything to the Display Crystals.

So first of all please strip the MBP and find both ends of the Display Data Cable, check the connections and try again. This guide should help MacBook Pro 17" Models A1151 A1212 A1229 and A1261 Display Data Cable Replacement

If that doesnt work and you think the cable is okay then you will need to replace your LCD.

There are a lot of LCD available on ebay at good prices.

First complete the following guide to remove the LCD MacBook Pro 17" Models A1151 A1212 A1229 and A1261 LCD Replacement

Next the following site can provide you with the list of compatible LCDs from multiple manufactures, don't buy from them just find the part number and search on eBay, just enter your MBP serial number hit enter and then click parts when your model appears http://www.thebookyard.com

Please let me know how you get on.

Cheers

First off, thanks for the prompt and detailed response! You rock.

You make some good points, I'm going to go ahead and order a cable and LCD and see how it goes.

I'm 50/50 on if it's the cable or LCD... leaning towards LCD, also going with a new LCD can't hurt....I'm sure it will be more crisp than this one cuz it's obv 6 or 7 years old!

thx
