Why does my printer not recognize a new print cartridge?

The printer continually tells me my HP 901 color cartridge is empty -- even after I have just replaced it -- and refuses to print in color. The black cartridge gives it no trouble. Is it possible that the contacts for the color cartridge are fouled or damaged in some way?

They were brand new HP cartridges. Apparently I somehow purchased three bad ones in a row. Fixed now, thank you.

The HP Printer has a 'chip" that can recognize a non HP refill.

Simple solution:

1./ UNPLUG THE POWER CORD FROM THE PRINTER

2./ RECONNECT THE POWER CORD

3./ WHEN THE LIGHTS BEGIN TO FLASH, PRESS AND HOLD THE ON/RESUME AND PAPER SIZE BUTTONS ( I DID NOT HAVE PAPER SIZE BUTTON SO HELD DOWN THE ZOOM BUTTON

4./ WHEN ONLY THE ON/RESUME LIGHT IS FLASHING RELEASE THE BUTTONS.

This is a useless method on HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 2515. Don't see why it would work on others..

Thank you I buy my refills from Hong Kong and they cost around A$20 for 4 cartridges whereas a new HP cartridge is A$65 for one only

such messages usually popup if thers an error in the machine itself...also i this its a strategy from hp as it does not allow users to use toners/cartridges other than their own brand...just saying!!!!

Official Website

The official HP site says to clean BOTH your Cartridge chip AND your printer chip connections with earbuds dipped in water, with the water pressed out so that it is damp. This made the most sense to me, but did not resolve my problem. Turn your printer off before you do this.

Printer Reset

So far, none of the Printer Reset methods have worked for me. Even keeping it off for 10+ minutes.

Old cartridge

I've also seen suggestions to first put back your old cartridge and then your new one again, as your printer could still be storing data of your old cartridge.

Faulty New Cartridge

As @Lise said - she just bought bad cartridges and the 3rd one worked. I expect that to be my problem, but if someone has any other things to try, please let me know.

my biggest problem with returning the ink cartridges (assuming they were faulty) was that Wal-Mart and other places either will not exchange them or don't want to.

I have a Laserjet pro 200 and received the message that I was using non-genuine HP toner. Only the black would work as it was an original HP. I heard that HP was forced to stop blocking the use of non-original HP toner ... and a firmware update would resolve the issue. And it did ! My original firmware was from 2012. I just updated it 10 min ago ... and the new non-genuine toner works now. Try a firmware update.

Hi..my printer (model: HP DESKJET INK ADVANTAGE 2520 hc) cannot detect the black ink. The error appears to be ink incompatibility and not do not recognize the ink at all. I already tried to remove and reinstall the cartridge, turn the power on, plug and unplug the cable and connection for quit amount of time but still the error still showed up. I also tried to wipe the cartridge and its connector (print head i think) using non fiber tissue and absolute alcohol, error dissapear for a few seconds, indicator showed full black ink at this point but then the error reappear again. I also already replacing to new black ink cartridge but it still flashing an empty ink error. Can anybody here help me to sort the things out? What should i do?

I have the same problem as @niharaf , even with new cartidge and old cartridge, my printer doesn't recognise any of them. I have tried the troubleshoot method suggested by HP, still nothing seems to worked.

As of the firmware update on 11/22/2018 HP printers will no longer accept nongenuine HP ink cartridges. When trying to install an aftermarket cartridge, I get a "Cartridge Error" message asking to reinstall the cartridge. This happens over and over with cartridges from different vendors. A case was opened with HP and they confirmed that aftermarket cartridges will no longer be accepted in HP printers. They said it was not the intent of the firmware update, but a bug in the update. They said reverting to a previous version of the firmware was not possible and I am stuck with using the costly HP cartridges. A new update may fix it in the future as happened in the past, due to a class action suit by customers. It will be interesting to see how soon HP will act on it as they are now generating boatloads of profits on cartridge sales in the mean time. Do not buy an HP printer if you plan to use aftermarket cartridges.

I have a Canon Pixma printer. I refill my black cartridge whenever it gets low. However, Canon doesn't like me using the same cartridge forever, so it will refuse to print. There is certain keystroke I press -- I believe I hold the black or color print button down for a few seconds -- and this clears the error. The printer no longer tells me how much black ink I have, but it now allows me to refill and use the same black cartridge forever.

I haven't figured out how to refill the color cartridge -- the three inks always seem to get mixed up when I refill the color cartridge. Therefore, I print in grayscale as much as possible, and then replace the color cartridge as needed..

The above method has served me well. If you are struggling with your HP printer, perhaps you would be happier with a Canon Pixma printer. You can get them for next to nothing at Walmart.com.

So here's what I do:

1. I refill the black cartridge whenever the printing fades.

2. I use the color cartridge as little as possible, so I don't have to replace it very often.

3. If the black cartridge ever wears out, I'll replace it.

4. If my printer ever goes on the blink, I'll replace it -- Canon Pixma is dirt cheap at Walmart.com.

5. If I ever have to replace my printer, the new printer comes with a brand new black cartridge that I can refill as needed.

I have bought several dirt-cheap HP and Canon printers at Walmart.com -- usually under $30 for a printer/scanner/copier.

In case if its new item then you need to make sure that whether its the original one or not because there are many cheap after market cartridges are available which either work for very short period of time or hardly be able to detect.

Secondly if its old one then most probably your cartridge has been expired or gone out of order.

You can also perform a head cleaning task by taking your cartridges apart and cleaning the metal contacts with some alcohol swab or perfume.

So we buy cartridge at Walmart and must assum it is "cheap" and go buy another? This is not a fix. Secondly, do you really clean a cartridge with perfume. There is no instruction on how to clean it but when I hear perfume, I am wonder about this anwer.
