Can you upgrade the processor?

I am quite dissatisfied with my iMac because it is slow in its tasks. Is it possible to upgrade the processor to something better? What processor can I switch this out of? Is there a professional shop out there that offers this kind of service? Thanks.

Have you upgraded the memory or hard drive since you got your system? Do you have an external FireWire HD which you can boot the system from?

You may have some options here to improve your system before switching out logic boards to a more powerful CPU version.

I have not upgraded the memory or the hard drive. I also do not have an external FireWire HD.

If you don't have a fireWire HD a USB one will work too (just slower). The trick here is to boot under the external drive so you can run Disk Utilities to repair if needed any problems and then using a defragmentation program defragment the HD. I do this on all my systems at least one a year (and some twice). The improvement can be great if you've never done it.

Adding memory also can improve performance quite dramatically. Given the cost I would do that next.

As to replacing the CPU Vs the entire logic board it's a matter of risk and costs. In either case you need to remove the entire logic board, then if you try to replace the CPU you need to get the correct one which can be very tricky if you've never done it before. The guide Jack pointed you to does not tell you what chip to get so you need to figure it out (the risk here is damaging the board if you get the wrong one). Given the price of a new logic board is not much more than getting the chip I recommend it that way for first timers.

But, were getting way ahead of what you should do first. Thats were I was leading you to, grab the low hanging fruit first then see where you are then.

Hello Dan,

So what is the procedure on booting on an external drive and defragmantization processes? Can you link me a tutorial for that? Also, when you mean by adding memory, you mean a hard drive right? Thanks for the help!

Use the OS installer to install on your plugged in FW/USB drive. Once you have that done. Go into the System Preferences to the Startup Disk control panel. Within it you should see both drives systems listed select the external drives system and hit restart. - As to a a good HD Defrag App I use Drive Genius as it also offers some other useful tools to help keep my systems running.

You can replace the cpu

iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389 CPU Replacement

However, replacing the memory may be a better idea, or maybe get an ssd.

Also, where can I get a new logic board and have a service to fix it? Is a newer logic board compatible with the other components? Does it include the CPU? Thanks. Vince

Memory is RAM and you can do this your self (very easy).

Review this iFixIt guide Installing iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2389 RAM. Your system currently has 256MB or 512MB of RAM (1 or 2 modules). Replace both with two 2MB or 4MB modules (4 or 8MB of total RAM). HAving two modules allows the system to interleaf the memory I/O (fastest). While you can also just install one larger module I think given the price difference two is best. Your system has four slots so you can then add more of the same size later if you still think you need more.

If your just surfing the web and light word processing 4MB will do, if you are doing anything heavy like graphics go up to 8MB total RAM. Here's the Apple TN on what you'll need iMac: How to remove or install memory.
