Why does my optic drive not respond?

I just completed an optic drive replacement. I followed the steps in the guide to the letter, but when I tried inserting a disc, it would not draw it in at all. The only thing I can think is that one of the connections is bad. the optical drive to logic board connection, or the inverter cable connector.

Or, that the (Used) optical drive I bought from ifixit is bad.

Does the computer function normally other than the optical drive problem? If so I would check that the cable is properly connected and not torn in any way. If it passes all these checks please contact ifixit and I'm sure they will work with you. Ralph

A PS-- You did replace screws in their original holes didn't you?

The computer does function normally. As of today, I am OS 10.6.3. I am confident that I did not tear any cables when I put it back together. The optic drive to logic board snapped back together nicely, and the inverter cable is secure - Though I don't know what the inverter cable is for - And the temp sensor is reconnected. The only other cables I disconnected and reconnected were the display (It works properly), and the camera and mic. Both of those functions work.

I'm thinking what I need to do is take it apart again to double check everything. I am not looking forward to that because of the work involved. But I will if I have to.

And yes, I did replace all screws in their original holes.

Thanks for the help

The 10.6.3 update for snow leopard is out? I've been running it in bootcamp all week. I guess it's time for a reboot!

The work involved?

Think of your Mac like it was a beautiful woman. It's a labor of love to take her apart and really know how she works. The sheer genius on how she's put together and how her parts interact are marvelous. She's a joy to work on and with. Treat her with love and respect and she'll give you years of service and satisfaction. Give her a make over with just a touch of RAM upgrade and speed her up with a 7200 hard drive or even a SSD. A system upgrade will make her sparkle and shine. Maybe the latest wireless mouse and keyboard. Hot $#!&. And people wonder why I'm a tech ;-)

Thanks anyway Mayer...You're advice, though eloquently written as it was, did not fix my problem..... It turned out that I DID NOT reconnect the optic drive connector board nicely at all to the logic board. A big part of my problem was dealing with those blasted "Ears" that hold the optic drive down to the inner frame of the iMac. That snap-together fastening system is a hassle! This is an Apple computer, not a Revell plastic model! Anyway, my optic drive works again.

Most of the people that help you are strictly volunteers. The points we get are only for bragging rights. We don't even get a discount on parts we order.
