Matthew Parrott, the "noticeable better performance" only applies to bigger hard drives and not any of the audio or video capabilities. It will allow for a better access of those drives, this will be noticeable on playing playlists. etc. The ram is part of the logic boards and not necessarily which generation it is. Anyhow, here is what I got:

820-1763-A motherboard can have 32MB RAM or 64MB RAM. The 30GB 5G iPod uses the 820-1763 board with 32MB RAM while the the 60GB 5G iPOd uses the 820-1763 motherboard with 64MB RAM.

The 5.5G iPods use the 820-1975-A motherboards. The 30GB 5.5G iPod uses a 820-1975 board with 32MB RAM. The 80GB iPod uses a 820-1975 board with 64MB RAM.

Hope this helps, good luck.

The motherboard on the left is the 32MB board and the logic board on the right is the 64MB memory board. The one on the left was pulled out of a 5th generation ipod video 30GB and the one on the right was pulled out a 5th generation ipod video 80GB.

How can you tell the difference between the boards that

actually have the 64mb buffer ? is there any suffix after

the model of the board where you can tell which board would

actually contain the 64mb ? Thanks for the help & reply.

Turn on the iPod by holding rewind and select. Once you are on the "SRV Diag Boot" screen press Menu to enter manual test. Select NTF then AutoTest and SDRAMQuickTest. From there it will either tell you 32mb or 64mb

Is there any any indication of 32mb or 64mb on the board itself? Most 5.5 replacement motherboards for sale have already been removed from the iPod.

I think the model number printed on the board are the same. You can probably look at the SDRAM chip and see if it's 32 or 64

The 64Mb chip is physically bigger than the 32Mb so its easy to spot

At last, an answer to the Ram question and a very easy one to spot as well. With the pictures above Tom French's comment that shows the sizes of the Ram chips on the different logic motherboards it's certainly puts the question to bed so thanks guys.
