What are the last three of your serial number? That way we can at least properly identify your iMac

The gain you would get from a faster processor would be negligible. Best to max out the RAM at 8 GB and install a faster hard drive. You would need to check to see what hard drive will work as your machine uses a Apple priority heat sensor on the drive.

If you are going to take the imac apart to upgrade the HDD to SSD then you might as well just put in a faster CPU anyways. The core 2 duo 3.06 GHz is only $15 on Ebay.

It actually can take 16GB of RAM (the newer i3, i5 & i7 models) and you can always replace the DVD superdrive with a SSD. The SSD alone will feel like a faster CPU to you :)

It can take 16gb? Have you done this? Which RAM did you put in it?

@Phil - You will need to make sure your systems firmware is up to date. Follow this Apple T/N: About EFI and SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Mac computers. Make sure yours is at this listed level or newer.

Yes, you can go up to 16 GB on this system with the newer firmware. As to the type, you need two 8 GB modules - 1066 MHz PC3-8500 DDR3 SO-DIMMs (204-pin).

Thanks Dan, I'll take a look into this. I already upgraded to an SSD and maxed out the RAM and it now seriously flies.

Has this 16GB of RAM been confirmed? The other Mac sites indicate MAX of 8GB total for this machine: iMac Early 2009 24" imac9,1 Boot: IM91.008D.B08 (latest), SMC: 1.45f0 .....

I'm buying a secondhand one and really wanted to put 16GB (8GBx2) into it. But everywhere else I'm reading is saying 4GBx2 MAX.

Thanks in advance for your help!

The Core 2 Duo models don't. Only the newer i3, i5 or i7 CPU series (Mid-2010) offer 16 GB support.

Just keep in mind the Core 2 Duo models have been dropped by Apple with MacOS Sierra.

I have successfully upgraded my girlfriends iMac ( early 2009 2.6 ghz core-duo ) . I upgraded the CPU and the hard drive to be SSD. I have a post showing the results with a badly filmed video.

I hope this helps someone, cuz it was almost a disaster for me.

I realize this post is now almost 3 years old but better late than never right?

Is it going to work on imac 2009 early 20 inch?

Your options are limited here. Yes, people have upgraded their i5 to i7 CPU's and GPU with units that are compatible with the given model of your system.

Review some of the iFixIt threads for some successes and failures. It does take more advanced skills to do this.

Frankly, if you've never opened or serviced a few iMac's I wouldn't waste the time or the risks. I think you'll be better off getting a new or used system that meets your needs.

Best to ask a new question on this as this is three years old and we have learned more and new options have come out, OWC has a solution for the hard drive racing fans and heat sensor issue.

I can confirm that the Crucial MX100 works like a dream. The difference in performance is like day vs night. With maxed out RAM my iMac 9,1 feels like a brand new machine. Performs just as good as my much newer slim 27" i7 (2014?)
