Water damage and possible diagnosis!

My son dropped his 3ds in the sink he said only half of it became submerged but then tried to plug it in and this caused it to stop completely-dead!. It's now about 3 months and given its time spent in rice extracting all the moisture it could and a new battery it turns on but the top and bottom screens and the round joystick are completely unresponsive, although some of the other buttons work e.g start button power! What I want to know is does anyone have a possible answer to my problem as I will try and fix it myself if I know the part I need?? Any advice would be great.

Many thanks

Toby hughes, the first thing to do is to not try to start it again. Disassemble it by using this guide. Clean all parts with +90%isopropyl alcohol. By now you may even already have corrosion damage, use a soft brush to clean the logic board, the connectors and the cable ends. Look for any components that look burned or are broken. Replace the battery and reassemble. Now re-evaluate and see what you get. It is possible that the cleaning will resolve the issues, but further trouble shooting may be need. There is a chance that you will need new displays, that you fuses may have burned out etc. Again start with cleaning, a new battery and re-evaluate. Let us know what works once that is done. Hope this helps, good luck.

Instead of 2-3 days in a bag of rice, its 2-3 weeks, it helps.

@Nicholas, besides the point that this question is over one year old, there is absolutely no evidence that rice does anything. It is one of the greatest myth when dealing with immersed electronics. Using rice is the same as doing nothing. While it may act as a desiccant, it does not prevent corrosion, does not displace liquid under components or EMI shields and may even deposit starches onto the components.
