How do I partition the disk into two or more partitions?

I just installed a new solid state 750 gb hybrid drive,

but always seems to beach ball or freeze.

Do I need to format the disk before I partition?

How do I partition the the disk into two or more partitions?

Will this fix my beach ball problem?

How many partitions should I choose?

Do I need to re-install the operating system?

The computer continues to freeze up, it is my understanding that if I partition the disk into at least two partitions to reduce search time, it will not beach ball so often

The last three figures of my serial number is 7XJ.

This drive may be to fast for your BUS and need to be jumpered down so Disk Utilities can see it correctly. To find out your max BUS speed please give us the last three figures of your serial number.

Larry,

In Disk Utility, select your drive, click on the Partition Tab, Click on Volume Scheme, Choose how many partitions you would like, then click on Options. Make sure you are setting the Mac OS Extended Journaled option then click apply. It will format automatically.

How many partitions you need is up to you. Why do you think you need more than one?

Yes you will need to install the Operating System if you partition/format the drive if it is the only one in that notebook.

Update

Larry,

That is not a correct. It could be taking too long to read "Beachball" for other reasons...lack of RAM, Large Program, Disk read times, wrong SATA hard drive etc.
