Can't sleep after booting from SSD in the optical bay position

I have replaced my optical drive with a SSD disk.

When I boot from the SSD I can't enter sleep mode (neither from the menu nor by closing the lid). If I boot from the internal HD I can go to sleep, with the SSD installed internally.

Before installing the drive in the optical drive bay I had it connected through USB to the same computer and installed OS X (10.6) on it. If I booted from it via USB I could enter sleep mode without any problem.

Why won't sleep mode work when I have booted off the SSD when it's connected in the optical drive bay space? All suggestions are appreciated!
