Mackie HR824 Auto Power fail or fail to power on.

I have a pair of Mackie HR824 and one fails to power on. There is a manual always on mode and that does not seem to work anymore either. Does anyone have experience repairing these devices? I have received the circuit diagram from the manufacturer, but I was looking for common issues to look for with this units, or typical failure points specific to these units.

Thanks for any input.

My problem's a bit different. The bottom dropped out on my 824's during a playback. The high range continued on both sides, but low end speakers stopped playing at the same time. There's no drag on the voice coils, and I thought it may be a fuse problem, noting oldturkey03's comment below. I haven't been able to identify the fuses on the board to see if fuse(s) are blown.

Anyone know where they are and what they look like?

These are classic studio monitors and the MK1 woofers are nearly impossible to find. There's a MK2 woofer that apparently fits the original MK1 cabinet, but is most likely not made the same or would ever act as the MK1 did, however is an alternative for replacement. It would be great to have a replacement woofer and tweeter tutorial/kit added to the inventory in the future among other parts as listed above. :)

I have the same problem, my speaker does not turn on... the voltage and the components work with the naked eye, what can I change so that it turns on

Aaron, for a completely dead Mackie HR824 I would start checking the following first:

AC power cord / J10 plug & socket ,

open primary winding of transformer T1,

and a blown fuse XF1 2.5A 120V.

Also, when you have it apart, check for leaky and bulging caps, pretty common error. May be you could post a copy of the diagram as an image on here. that way somebody else can help you diagnose it a bit more precise. Hope this helps, good luck.

Thank you for your response. That was the type of info I was looking for. I will try this and post the results.

I would post the schematics, but in order to get them you have to have to agree to not redistribute them in any fashion. You can obtain them easily by emailing techmail@loudtechinc.com and requesting them, along with sending them model & serial number off the device you are working on. A model and serial number would look something like this:

Model: HR824

Serial number: AG32417

They did say that only authorized service centers receive service bulletins, and my guess is the easy book on typical repair issues. A friend of mine told me he had some repaired, and that guy told him it was cheap switches that fail in time. The speaker that failed, always spiked the speaker hard when you would turn it off. The other speaker only gives a little click when powering off.

Thanks again.

Aaron

In one of mine it was the blown fuse.

Hey guys,

So just to be clear is it the hr824 or hr824II? If its just the hr824, there is a service bulletin for the auto on function failure. This only effects models pre april 2001. So that could be an issue. I could send you the info on the fix if need be.

This may be issue with of my hr824's with manufacturing date "OM8509". I've run through several check list I've found but have been unable to repair. Do you still have information on this fix?

Hi there, I'm having same issue. Can you advise where this service bulletin is on auto function failure pre 2001? My speaker went out right after I changed this setting

door

Hi Brian, Have You got by the chance newer service manual for HR824 MK2. I have the power issue with my Mackie... It could be bad capacitor but not sure wich one...

Hi Brian, I have an HR824 OM1012 which the auto power function doesn't turn off, is that covered by the service bulletin?

I'm having the same sort of problem. Pre 2001 HR824s. Funny thing is both have developed the problem at about the same time. I've never used the auto-on function, just powered up the speakers from the front switch. I intermittently lose the woofer- sometimes works for a bit then fades- sometimes if I crank the input it'll return for a bit. Now on one of them, sometimes it doesn't power on at all..... but then may intermittently come back on (though the woofer seems permanently out on that one). If I work the auto-on switch back and forth it's really crackly, and I suspect its that switch that's shot. Brian, does the service bulletin you mentioned cover a fix for that? If so, would you send it to me? Many thanks- I need my monitors back!

Follow up-

I pulled the back off, removed the CB and carefully sprayed contact cleaner into the switches and worked them back and forth a bunch. Buttoned things back up everything is working properly now, so it was definitely an issue with the auto-on switch. No idea if this will be a long-term fix, we'll see.....

I have this same no low end issue. Started a few days ago and when I pulled the jack out the back without powering down the bass come back. Only to be gone again the following day. Since then iv had no low end. I took it apart and checked fuse which was in working order. Now I have to power up using auto on or it won't fire up. Still no bass. Any help would be appreciated greatly.

Ok I now know it is the LOW FREQ switch 100%. After switching back n forth many times I set it to normal and kinda wiggled it without actually switching its position. Bass is back for now but a new switch will be needed .

door

The contact cleaner and the wiggling works...... for a while. I'm back to having problems again. Seems the crappy switched need to be replaced...

door

Just jiggled the switch on the back and my woofer is back!!!! Thank YOU!!!
