My Wi-Fi quit working... is that replaceable?

I have a 16GB iPod Touch and the Wi-Fi started acting finicky and now it won't connect at all. I took it to the Apple store and because it's past the one year warranty they said "Sorry". I tried restoring it and reseting it and nothing has worked. Is there a wireless card or something that's replaceable in the touch and if so, do you sell them? I do a lot of research, etc. on the run and the Wi-Fi is a vital part of my Touch. Please let me know if there is any solution that you know about! Thanks.

On the 1st Gen there is the plastic with a small metal u shaped piece that has a spring metal contact on it. This is screwed onto the metal case. It can be replaced but I have not found a vendor who sells this piece.

There is a gold clip piece that presses down on the front of the case and can get lost easily as per other posts on this site. It is referred to as an antenna but I am not sure what exact function it performs in the antenna circuit. I think it provides some sort of ground to the circuit board and to the metal case. I have not found a vendor source for this either.

The actual circuit board side which is rectangular looking with one rounded side and has copper traces on both sides is an integral part of the whole $100.00 plus I pod circuit board. I wish just this small circuit board could be replaced but it looks to me like it is a ribbon cable sandwiched inside the main circuit board.

Maybe the spring contact on the plastic small metal u shaped piece could be pushed down and needs to be extended again to make contact with the copper circular land on the small circuit board. Or maybe the gold clip is out of place or case is popping apart or the iPod got dropped at some point of time and the spring clip or some other mechanical connection got out of alignment.

There are pics on the repair site that show the parts I am referring to and also a post below about the mechanical issues.

Good luck as I am fighting the same wifi issues on my 8 gig with less than reliable success.

Thanks for the diagnosis. It's sad to hear that this is such a common problem and that there's no sure fix. When I get some time I'll open it up and see what I can find thanks to your suggestions. Good luck with yours and I'll keep you posted if I happen to have any success...

Same issue here. What amazes me is that if I disconnect the battery for a while and connect it again Wifi works for a while ...

sorry for my English, I am from Germany.

I actually broke my antenna in half in an attempt to repair... Later after I upgraded to 3.1.3 Firmware and bent my outer metal shell on my iPod touch 1g 16gb to fit in a tighter fashion it worked again miraculously! I think that your problem is you probably dropped it on that corner like i did and it screwed the case to where the antenna was not making sufficient contact. The answer I found was updating the firmware or fixing the back shell.

I have same problem with an ipod touch 16g 1st gen no wifi, but if i leave it in the car overnight, when cold then try it again the wifi works perfectly until the ipod returns to room temperature. Not a permant fix unfortunatly.
