help with damaged IC identification

Hi there,

a friend asked me to take a look at his laptop as it was out of warranty. it got some liquid damage. when i popped open the unit it had some corrosion and residue which all cleaned up nicely using alcohol and a hog hair brush.

i found a damaged component. from tracing the components it looks like it is in the power section.

it’s a 13.3 MacBook unibody logic board.

First picture is the top right section as the bottom of the notebook is open, bat and hd bay towards user.

this is the regulator/fet/? Ic in question. Top numbers are 1127 (8G4 55A2, lot and date numbers?)

any help on this one would be great! i can't seem to find any schematics anywhere, which i find odd for older electronics.....

Thanks,

-Chris

Hi Chris,

There are only few people working on Mac logic boards at component level and I don't know anyone here on this forum. It's not easy to identify a specific IC on a logic board without a shematic but my advice would be to scan the board high resolution (or the area where the faulty IC is located) and contact the Digi-Key technical support department for IC identification and purchase. Send them the scan and they'll look at it. These guys know what they're talking about and have a great electronic expertise. It cost you nothing to try. I contacted them for a iBook G4 microfuse (inverter logic board circuitry) and they found out the good part replacement.

Here's the Digi-Key link:

Not sure about the first, but the second picture is the Magsafe DC in jack (the power in module), part number 820-2361-02, and there is one for sale on eBay here:

its not the magsafe module. its on the logic board itself. the fet/regulator in the center of the second picture.

Sorry Chris, the picture said 'top right', so that's what I assumed you meant. I figure you'll be hard pushed to get hold of these components through this site, but you could contact these folks to see if they can help you correctly identify and supply the components as they fix logic boards:

Adam, I sometimes recommend parts from this site because I've bought from them and I know the parts have been tested. Most of the contributors here receive nothing from iFixit. We do this to help others. I've never had to return a part to them. I also recommend other sites if I think their price is to high. I usually email them about it. That doesn't happen often. I am willing to pay a premium to anyone who can supply me with constantly good parts as the time it saves me more than compensates me. You appear to be very knowledgeable and your contributions are most welcome. Please keep coming back. Get to know us. Click on the users tab and look at the contributors. Only one of the top 16 contributors works for iFixit, that's Ben Eisenman and he's the best parts man I've ever seen.

Chris, just an addenda regarding your search for schematics, there's a very good discussion about it here that pretty much explains why you won't find any:

How does a person learn to repair MacBook logic boards?

I do hope you find what you're looking for and you get your friends Mac fixed.

:D i got my degree a few years back... funny that everything they cram down your throat never really gets used much, and only rarely get to play with same level of lab equipment. (industry is more focused on replacing boards rather than fixing them)

as for schematics... its usually the first & second year students that go out of their way to identify and tear down some of their stuff they use. (i did) but a 8+ level board that is the heart and soul of their WOW machines might pose too much of a risk :P

Ive Changed my fair share of those exact IC's Mouser carries them.

be careful, the chip does NOT like to come up cleanly at all!

Hi

Im repairing my a1278 logicboard due to water damaged. Ive found out that the airport card and bluetooth card module were not working. Ive replaced both and only the bluetooth works.

The laptop works ok except keyboard backlight, ethernet port and airport. If I can locate what's the name of this IC, on picture below, I can go futher. I do have a schematic manual of the a1278 but I'm trying to get used to it. See picture:

I have all the tools to repair liquid spills but this IC I need to replace. Ive tried a digital camera but the number is not clear.
