I have an Xbox 360 elite and I put in a game and it says play DVD. Idk what it's wrong with it I don't believe it's a laser issue because I took it out of a working Xbox. Please help

kel, you do remember that"The Xbox 360 is designed so that the DVD drive works only with the particular game console it is installed in. Replacing a defective DVD drive with a replacement DVD drive does not work, since the replacement has a different DVD drive key, which the game console won't accept." source. Problem is, you can not just change the drive. The drive has to be mated to the console with the right keycode. Check on here and here for more info on this. It is most likely that it does not work is because the drive is not mated...

The cables on my CPU don't match the cables on the DVD drive
Which cables do not match? Regardless of any of this, did you get the drive key from the old optical drive? Did the cables match on your original drive?
The cables to my computer don't match the cables to the Xbox disc drive.
It does need a SATA connection. What type off drives does your computer have?
The cd DVD disc drive on my pc has a four prong connection to where the Xbox DVD drive has an 8 prong conection
you coud just take it to a shop that fixes them because i had the same probem and i bought a new disk drive and sti had the probem so i toook it to a freind and now its working perfect

I have the same problem. Just bought a brand new xbox 360 Toshiba/Samsung MS28 drive. Actual drive I removed. This drive plays Cd's and DVD's but it won't play the games. I hear a lot about these drive key's and they have to be uploaded by firmware in the actual drive. This is true and it sucks. You have to buy small equipment to do this at home. THIS IS THE QUICKEST AND EASIEST SOLUTION AND MOST OF ALL IT ACTUALLY WORKS MUST READ!!!! Right first off the problem is when u put ur game in the xbox 360 its comes up as play DVD right? so all you have to do is turn the xbox 360 upright so it turns from _ to / (the console) and then turn it on open the disk thingy and wait abou 10 sec then close it and wait for it to load but have to say it may take a whilw prob around 3 min hope this helped let me know wat u think just had to reply to this coz the other people are doing my headin with getting a new xbox and stuff this does work i tried it for myself hope this helps! ;) xxx

Thank you Gemma for your ideas. I have gone through the trouble of connecting the 360 drive to my PC's sata board while using the xbox console for the power. I have read and downloaded software from jungleflasher and ixtreme firmware to flash this drive. I was unsuccessful in disabling raid in BIOS mode. It gave me the option but never disabled. When I saw your post about swapping the drives internal board, I thought what a great idea. It took five minutes to switch the board. I did not put the the console together until it was tested. It worked and I can play 360 games again. Until your idea I was working on this flashing thing for three weeks. Thanks again.

Inside the DVD drive is a mother board that controls the unit and has the firmware installed. If you buy a brand new DVD drive for your Xbox 360, it will not work until you flash the drive to match the drive key. A way around this is to remove the original drive that has problems. Then take it apart and remove the mother board (green computer board). After you have the original mother board removed, do the same thing to the brand new drive. Be careful not to mix them up because they will be exactly the same. Install the original mother board (green board) into the brand new drive and connect all plug ports. The original mother board has the firmware installed and the drive key has already been matched by the manufacturer. Then reassemble the drive and the Xbox. The new drive should work perfectly as the old one use to. Thats what I did and it worked great. It's been 2 years since. This worked for the Toshiba/Samsung TS-H943 drive. Good luck.

Hi Dereck yes you have to find the exact DVD drive as the original that came with your Xbox 360. Match all the numbers on the DVD case. I purchased my replacement DVD drive on ebay for $29.00 brand new. Open the metal casing and unplug the ribbon cables that are connected to the inner motherboard of the DVD player. Then swap the inner mother board from the original DVD player and connect it to the new DVD player. Then put the metal casing back on. The original inner motherboard from the DVD player is already married to the Xbox 360. It should work as new. If it doesn't work your inner motherboard may be corrupted. This has worked for me. I tried to flash the drive first with the SATA cable on my PC and it took me 3 weeks learning as I go. Swapping DVD motherboards is the fastest and easiest way I have experienced. Remember they must be exactly the same. I think the other ones like Ben Q needs soldering.

I took the disc drive out of a red ring Xbox and put it in an elite and the Xbox game comes up on my screen as play DVD instead of the game
