It sounds like it could potentially be a power supply issue, it may not be able to handle the current needed for the xbox to update, especially if it is also doing it in the offline update mode. I'd personally recommend going to the service centre first though and seeing what they say before attempting any repairs, a voided warranty may mean they refuse to work on it entirely.
