You do run the risk of damaging the LCD, and if it is already damaged, then you’ll need to need to replace it anyways.  We repair shops typically don’t do glass only repairs because its difficult and more time consuming. I’m sure there are tons of tutorials on youtube on how to do glass only repairs.
