You’re right there. This is a software issue. There are other reports of this happening with version 6.7.8. Apple recommends a reset. However, this often does not work. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250494933 I probably would get new earbuds, but probably NOT Airpods. There is no software upgrades available, and who knows if Apple will do this in the future to their later models.
