I think the small component that is suspect is that silver rectangle chip on the home button itself. It is held onto the flex with BGA solder balls which consists of a grid of solder balls roughly 4 x 3.

Some of those balls can become loose due to flexing of the ribbon cable right under that chip.
That chip is called the Turtle IC. It has quite some underfill around that chip so most experienced micro-solderers have fixtures to hold them firmly in place to remove the underfill and fix the connections under the chip.
