I had the same problem and finally figured it out.

#  Have the phone on

# Plug it into your computer with iTunes open.
# Press and hold the volume down button
# While doing step 3 press and hold the power button.
# Once screen is black keep holding the volume down button yet let go of the power button.
# The computer should recognize the devise within 10 seconds.
# Update using iTunes.
