I tried replacing the 500GB in my A1302 with a Western Digital 2 TB drive (WD20EADS) -- worked fine with the exception of the fact that it never spun down. Ever. This obviously negated the heat benefit of using a "green" drive. Not wanting to take a chance on either a seagate drive or the samsung firmware update, I took a flyer on a new drive -- Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000 HDS5C3020ALA632 (0F12117). Thus far it formatted fine, is quiet, and most importantly, spins down as expected. They have a 3TB version, but I didn't want to push my luck.

The 7K3000 7200 RPM series would likely work as well -- would be somewhat faster, but my main concern was heat and resultant power supply failure, so I went with the less power-hungry drive.
At the same time, I got rid of the rubber mat and replaced it with 4 rubber feet. Not terribly elegant, but it sure runs cooler (and hopefully longer).

Best of luck.
